Growing Vegetables

February 14, 2023

Tomatoes and peppers are two of the most popular vegetables to grow in a home garden. Not only are they delicious and versatile in the kitchen, but they are also relatively easy to grow with the right care and attention. In this blog post, we will explore the best practices for growing tomatoes and peppers in your home garden.

1. When it comes to growing tomatoes and peppers, we've hand selected varieties that are optimal for container gardening. Our tomatoes, are a determinate variety that grows compact. Our pepper variety, is also compact and perfect for container gardening.

2. At Shimo, we grow tomatoes and peppers from seed, because when done so, the plants are more resistant to disease and pest damage, and result in strong stems and healthy leaves.

3. Tomatoes and peppers need plenty of sunlight to thrive, so make sure you plant them in a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight per day.

4. Tomatoes and peppers need regular watering to keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. Avoid overhead watering, as this can promote disease. Instead, water at the base of the plant and use a soaker hose or drip irrigation to deliver water directly to the roots.

5. Because tomatoes and peppers "fruit" they need a good amount of fertilizer to promote healthy growth and fruit production. Add the Shimo fertilizer every 2-3 weeks at the base of the plant in a circle, 3 inches from the plant stalk/stem.

6. As tomato and pepper plants grow, they will need support to prevent them from toppling over. Use stakes or cages to support the plants and keep them upright. This will also help to prevent fruit from touching the ground, which can lead to rot.

7. Harvest your tomatoes and peppers regularly to encourage the plants to keep producing. Pick them when they are ripe, but still firm. If you wait too long, the fruit may become overripe and start to rot on the vine.

In conclusion, growing tomatoes and peppers can be a rewarding experience for home gardeners. By selecting the right varieties, providing adequate sunlight, water, and fertilizer, and providing support for your plants, you can enjoy a bountiful harvest of delicious and healthy produce. Happy gardening!
