Growing Mustard Greens

February 14, 2023

Mustard greens are a nutritious and versatile vegetable that can be grown easily in your backyard or in containers. With their peppery flavor and high nutrient content, they are a great addition to any meal.

Here is a step-by-step guide to growing mustard greens in your garden:

  1. Choose the right location: Mustard greens require full sun and well-drained soil. Choose a spot in your garden that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.
  2. Fertilizing: Mustard Greens don't require a lot of fertilizer, but a light application of a Shimo Plant Food every few weeks helps to promote healthy growth. Feel free to amend the soil with organic matter like compost or aged manure to improve the soil structure and fertility.
  3. Plant the seeds: Sow 20 - 30 mustard green seeds using a casting motion directly into the soil. Plant the seeds about 1/4 inch deep and cover them with soil. Water the seeds gently to ensure the soil is moist but not soaked.
  4. Water: Mustard greens need consistent moisture, so water them regularly.
  5. Lettuce doesn't require a lot of fertilizer, but a light application of a Shimo Plant Food every few weeks helps to promote healthy growth. In general, we recommend to avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers, as these can lead to excessive leaf growth and poor root development.
  6. Harvest the leaves: Mustard greens can be harvested when they are about 4 to 6 inches tall. Use scissors or pruning shears to snip 2 inches above the soil line. Harvesting the leaves regularly will encourage the plant to produce more leaves.
  7. Store the leaves: Mustard greens can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. Before storing them, rinse the leaves thoroughly and dry them. Wrap them in a paper towel and store them in a plastic bag.

Mustard greens are a delicious and healthy addition to any meal. They can be sautéed, steamed, or added to soups and stews. With their easy-to-grow nature, they are a great choice for both experienced and novice gardeners. Start growing your own mustard greens today and enjoy the fresh and flavorful taste of homegrown greens.
