Growing Lettuce Greens

February 14, 2023

Lettuce is a versatile and healthy vegetable that can be grown in a variety of settings, from large outdoor gardens to small indoor containers. It's easy to grow and requires little maintenance, making it an ideal crop for beginners and experienced gardeners alike.

Here are some tips for growing lettuce:

  1. There are many different types of lettuce to choose from, each with its own unique flavor and texture. At Shimo we've selected Red Lettuce for it's wonderful taste, and the fact that it's easy to grow. This variety brings a bold color to the garden and the salad bowl. In addition, Red Lettuce is high in essential vitamins and minerals, yet very low in calories. Red Lettuce is well-suited to grow in a variety of climates and conditions.

  2. Soil: Lettuce grows best in loose, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Our Shimo soil provides an optimal environment for lettuce to grow.

  3. Planting: Plant lettuce seeds or seedlings in the spring or fall, depending on your climate. Lettuce grows best in cool weather. Plant 3 - 6 evenly spread around your Shimo. Cover the seeds lightly with soil, water well, and keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate.

  4. Watering: Lettuce needs regular watering to keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering as this can lead to disease and root rot. Water deeply once or twice a week, depending on the weather and soil conditions.

  5. Fertilizing: Lettuce doesn't require a lot of fertilizer, but a light application of a Shimo Plant Food every few weeks helps to promote healthy growth. In general, we recommend to avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers, as these can lead to excessive leaf growth and poor root development.

  6. Harvesting: Lettuce can be harvested when the leaves are young and tender, usually about 4-6 weeks after planting. Cut the leaves with a sharp knife, or a pair of scissors, leaving the base of the plant intact to allow for regrowth. We recommend that you harvest twice with the cut-and-come-again method, but no more than three times, to help to promote continued growth and prevent bolting (when the plant goes to seed).

In conclusion, growing Red lettuce is a simple and rewarding endeavor that can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of their gardening experience. With a little care and attention, you can produce a bountiful harvest of fresh, healthy Red lettuce that can be enjoyed in salads, sandwiches, and other dishes. Happy growing!
